Azonto / Cappuccino

Azonto is a popular dance that originated in Ghana, West Africa, and started to spread also outside Ghana around 2012.  Since then, azonto has become familiar in afro pop clubs around the world. The dance typically includes movements and gestures that jokingly mimic everyday activities.

Come to have fun and to learn the right dance moves to the latest hit tunes from Ghana! The class suits all levels of dancers, but previous dance experience of course helps.

The teacher is Ghanaian dancer Amartey “Cappuccino” Meshark, who nowadays lives in Turku. Dance is Amartey’s passion and he has studied both azonto and traditional Ghanaian dances and drumming in his home country.

Afrobeats/azonto

Afrobeats is a collective name for a variety of West African pop styles mainly from Ghana and Nigeria. Maybe the most famous of them is azonto, a popular dance style from Ghana that started spreading all over the world around 2012. As many African club dance styles, afrobeats is a mix of many influences, local traditional dances, earlier African pop styles like coupé décalé and ndombolo, as wells as hip hop, dancehall etc. You might want to wear sneakers to this class, but bare feet are also ok. The class fits all levels of dancers, but previous dance experiences of course helps – be prepared to have some fun!

Eben, Ebenezer Aidoo, is a dancer and acrobat from Ghana currently living in Finland. Already as a child he started performing with Ghana Dance Ensemble, a company specialising in traditional dances of Ghana. Later he went to get an education in circus in China. Eben has performed all over Europe in different kinds of shows and events, both live and on TV. Nowadays he also teaches dance and acrobatics regularly in Tampere and Helsinki.
