Malang Cissokho

Malang Cissokho plays Western African kora and guitar and sings Mandinka tribe’s traditional songs and his own compositions.

He has been living in Finland for a long time and is a member of griot family from Casamance, Senegal. Malang’s father is a well-known kora player. Malang himself started to play first guitar and modern music, before starting to play kora. Nowadays he’s a master in playing the instrument. While living in Senegal, Malang played with the world famous Youssou N’Dour and in Finland he has become famous for playing with Piirpauke, Cool Sheiks, Riddim Raiders and J. Karjalainen. Malang has recorded five albums in Finland. The CD:s can be ordered from the musician himself.

 

Lanyi & Friends

Guinean-Finnish trio Lanyi consists of N’Fanly Camara, Outi Kallinen and Abdoulaye Condé. The name Lanyi comes from the susu language and means mutual understanding. This time Lanyi will be joined on stage by Guinean stars visiting Finland, so we can expect a unique gig!

The trio playes traditional Guinean music in their own arrangements. Their repertoire includes beautiful love songs, funny stories and fierce rhythms spiced with energetic dancing. There are more instruments than musicians: balafons, krins, kora, gongoma, djembes, dunduns and many other percussions!

 

Jackson Wahengo & Friends

Jackson Wahengo a guitarist from Namibia, currently residing in Denmark. He will conduct a Master Class workshop for 10 teachers from Tampere music schools. Wahengo will be teaching Namibian songs to the teachers, and they will present the results of their collaboration as a big band at the Yo-talo showcase on Thursday 28.7. The main idea of the workshop is to influence teachers about African music so that they are able to apply the methods and structure of the music in their schools. Dr. Sakari Löytty will be a part of the workshop in order to assist Jackson Wahengo and the band.

THREE BIRDS – Musical dance stories from Africa

A story from a young sea turtle who wants to find out what could life be above the sea. During his travels he meets extraordinary creatures and hears wonderful music! The music, children’s rhymes, and the mask characters are based on Guinean folklore and on the flight of the fireflies.
