Freedom of speech (Finland 100) / Pirfest
As part of Finland’s 100 year celebrations, Pirfest the association of festivals in the Pirkanmaa region, launched a series of videos representing the member festivals and their views on the freedom of speech in Finland. The video about Fest Afrika and the 2017 festival theme “Voices to be heard” emphasizes the importance of also minorities having their voices heard in Finnish society.

The event will present the festival theme “Voices to be Heard” and the research project “The History of African Musicians in Finland” through short presentations, interviews and musical performances. Speakers/performers: Menard Mponda (Fest Afrika), Elina Seye (Global Music Centre) and musicians Malang Cissokho and Ismaila Sané.

Afroeuropeans Conference
Fest Afrika collaborates this year with the international Afroeuropeans: Black Cultures and Identities in Europe conference that takes place at the University of Tampere 6 – 8 July 2017.
The conference program includes also sessions on African and African-derived musics in Europe. To participate at the conference, you have to register and pay the conference fee (50 €) by June 8th. Check the conference website for details and instructions for registration.

At the workshop we will make flowers out of colourful plastic bags. You can keep your own flowers or give them for decorating the festival market. You can bring old plastic bags with you (holes don’t matter), but there will be materials available. The workshop is lead by artist-musician Macoumba Ndiaye.
14.30 & 15.15 Fairytale composition: Chiwele and the giant (in Finnish)
Chiwele and the giant is a traditional fairytale from East Africa. During the adventure, children will have the chance to try out different African instruments and to sing and dance. At the same time we will find out, how the clever Chiwele and his grandmother are able to fool the scary giant that lives in the forest.
The fairytale composition is led by Petra Käppi, duration about 30 min., max 25 children per performance

Exhibition
Ismaila Sané’s biographic exhibition “Manj anaw – Know the Human – Tunne ihminen”

World music artist, percussionist, singer and dancer-choreographer originally from Senegal, Ismaila Sané, celbrated his 60th birthday last year. In fall 2016, a retrospective exhibition on Sané’s life was put together, and now it can be seen also in Tampere. The life and career of the artist known from the bands Piirpauke, Saïsba, Senfi and Galaxy is presented through photos, music and newspaper clippings.
Ismaila Sané is known as an expert of the djembe and bougarabou among other things. He has had a long international career starting from 1974 in Dakar, Senegal, when he was a percussionist and solo dancer in Ballets Bougarabou. He has received many awards, e.g. the prize of the Cultural Foundation of Kalevala Koru and the Suomi prize by the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture as member of the group Galaxy. He has also received the artist pension of the state of Finland starting in 2017.
The exhibition has been produced by the department of culture of Lempäälä community, Etnosoi! festival and Senfi Production. The exhibition was put together by Ismaila Sané, Piela Auvinen and Outi Sané. The Finnish Cultural Foundation’s Pirkanmaa fund has supported the planning of the exhibition.
