Seminar
Fest Afrika festival aims to create networking opportunities and raise awareness of African musics. For this purpose, the festival hosts a music camp for a group of invited artist living in the Nordic countries. These artists will work together and create a joint performance that will be heard in the Saturday concert of the Fest Afrika 2014.
The Nordic cross-cultural music camp serves as a platform for African musicians in the Nordic countries: it offers a setting where they can influence each other by exchanging musical knowledge, and share information about possible ways to reach new audiences in the region.
The participants of the music camp, together with other music professionals, will also get together for a seminar to discuss how we could increase the visibility of African artists and their activities in the Nordic countries. The objective is to promote collaborations between artists, organizers, and different institutions in order to increase the number of initiatives that reflect the cultural diversity in Nordic communities and that would make African musics more familiar to local audiences.
The Nordic cross-cultural music camp and the seminar is supported by Nordic Culture Point and Nordic Culture Fund.
The seminar is open and free to anyone interested in its theme!
The language of the seminar is English.

Communicative textiles
The exhibition presents colourful printed cloths that are used for clothing all over Africa. The cloths can also carry messages that the people wearing them want to pass to others in their community. Clothss from different parts of Africa have been chosen for the exhibition.
As a part of the exhibition is Karoliina Halsti-Ndiaye’s installation We have a message – Suñu bat. Based on a project between her and girl groups of a Senegalese NGO, it shows how textiles can be used as a channel of communication in the local community. In the project, the girls were encouraged to draw pictures and design patterns that would enhance awareness about children’s rights. Some of the drawings were put together to prints and printed on textile that can be used in campaigns and NGO activities inside the community.
Karoliina Halsti-Ndiaye has a master’s degree from the Aalto University School of Art and Design, from the program for textile art and design. She has been living in Senegal, and is strongly linked there not only through her husband but also thorough Senegalese dance. She has worked as a designer in development projects for example in Senegal and India, where she has trained and helped local producers in the process of product development.
