Ngoma drum building course / Menard Mponda
Mon at 5-8 pm (7 pm)
Tue at 3-7 pm (8 pm)
The ending time is flexible because sometimes the discussion about the culture and history behind the ngoma tradition and building the drum takes longer than planned.
During the 2-day course you learn about the culture and history of the ngoma tradition and how it relates to African music and dance. You will build yourself a unique African drum using a metallic crate and cow hide. When the drum is ready, it needs about a week to dry before it is ready to be played.
The price of the workshop is 150 € including teaching and all the materials. We can take max 10 people to the workshop and it is organized outdoors. If it rains, there will be a tent stand provided. You don’t need previous experience in drum building, just bring work gloves, a 10-liter bucket and a pair of scissors. The cafe at Haihara is not open on Mondays, so bring your own snacks, something hot to drink and warm clothes (if the weather requires it). On Tuesday, the cafe is open.
Menard Mponda is teaching the workshop. The teaching will be interpreted into Finnish, if necessary. Registration is open till June 8, please fill in the registration form..

The Joy of Rhythm and Dance / Annina Tuhkunen
Thu at 5.30-7
In Africa, dance and music are part of a living and communal tradition. Traditional rhythms are often associated with a certain event, celebration or rite of passage. In the workshop, we get to know West African dance rhythms and the down-to-earth and body-healing movement language of the dances. We will enjoy dancing together. This workshop is open to everyone without complicated choreographies.
West African Dance / Annina Tuhkunen
Thu at 7-8.30 pm
West African dance is energetic, holistic and the language of the movements is diverse. It is both a living tradition and a valued performing art form. In the workshop, we study movements and rhythms of the traditional mande culture and we learn dance choreography based on Guinean dances. The workshop requires some experience of African or other dances.
West African Dance / Macoumba Ndiaye
