July 6 @ 16:00 - July 7 @ 13:30
Kora is a West African string instrument, sometimes also described as a harp-lute, that comes from the region that is nowadays The Gambia and Southern Senegal. The beautiful-sounding instrument, usually with 21 strings is one of the traditional instruments used by the jeli or griot of the Mandinka people. The jeli are singers, storytellers and keepers of history.
This 2-day course gives you an introduction to playing the kora. At the same time, you will get to know something about the fascinating musical traditions of the Mandinka. The teacher is Check Cissokho from Senegal, whose family has passed on songs, stories and the art of playing the kora from generation to generation for hundreds of years. No previous experience is needed and Cheick brings instruments for the participants to use.
If you happen to have a kora of your own, please contact us (firstname.lastname@example.org) in advance, so you can get a discount of the course price and Cheick will give you instructions for tuning your instrument.
Tunnelmia viime kerralta 🙂
